Our vetting process

Before introducing a nanny to a family, we aim to ensure they meet high professional standards. Our review process may include:

  • Experience and childcare background checks
  • Reference verification with previous employers
  • Identity verification
  • DBS background checks where applicable
  • Interview or screening conversation with our team

We aim to introduce only reliable and professional candidates to families.

Things to consider before hiring a nanny

Before beginning your search, it can be helpful to think about your family’s specific childcare needs. Some questions families often consider include:

  • Do you need a full-time or part-time nanny?
  • Would you prefer a live-in or live-out nanny?
  • What hours and days will the nanny be required to work?
  • What is your weekly salary budget for childcare?
  • Do you need the nanny to drive or travel with your family?
  • Are you looking for someone with specific qualifications or extensive experience?
  • Will the role involve sole care of the children or shared care with parents?

Thinking about these details helps us match you with the most suitable candidates.

Typical nanny duties

A professional nanny’s main responsibility is the care and wellbeing of the children. In addition, many nannies also assist with childcare-related duties, often referred to as “nursery duties.” These may include:

  • Preparing meals and snacks for the children
  • Organising educational and recreational activities
  • Taking children to school, nursery or playgroups
  • Tidying children’s bedrooms and play areas
  • Washing and organising children’s clothing
  • Supporting daily routines such as naps, homework and bedtime preparation

Nannies are generally not expected to carry out full household cleaning or cook for the entire family, unless this is discussed and agreed beforehand.

Interviewing a nanny

When meeting potential candidates, it can be helpful to ask questions that allow you to understand their childcare approach and experience. Some useful topics to discuss include:

  • Why they chose to become a nanny
  • Their previous childcare experience
  • Activities they enjoy doing with children
  • How they structure a typical daily routine
  • Their approach to discipline and communication
  • Experience caring for children of similar ages

It’s also important to give the nanny an opportunity to ask questions about your family and childcare expectations.

Many families choose to arrange a second meeting or trial day so the nanny can meet the children and experience the household routine before making a final decision.

Reference checks

Reference checks are an important part of the hiring process and help provide reassurance for parents. When speaking with previous employers we may ask about:

  • The ages of the children cared for
  • The nanny’s reliability and punctuality
  • Communication with the family
  • How the nanny interacted with the children
  • The reasons the role ended

These conversations can provide valuable insight into the nanny’s professionalism and childcare approach.

Ofsted registered nannies and childcare schemes

Some families prefer a nanny who is Ofsted registered, as this may allow them to access certain childcare support schemes. Becoming Ofsted registered typically requires:

  • Registration with the childcare register
  • Completion of approved training
  • A valid paediatric first aid qualification
  • A DBS background check

Parents should check which childcare support schemes apply to their situation.
